10 ways to help the parent of a child with autism

So, if you know someone who has a child with autism, here are 10 ways you can help:

1. Encourage your friend to seek out whatever support is on offer from social and educational services. When parents and services work together in a mutually respectful way, everyone is a winner.

2. Support your friend to advocate for her child. Medical professionals and school staff often focus on what the child can’t do.

Sensory-Friendly Gallery Tour & Art Class

Sensory Souk has partnered with Qatar Museums Gallery: Al Riwaq to bring you a Sensory-Friendly gallery tour and art class for children with special needs based around their latest exhibit: Driven by GERMAN DESIGN.

The lights and sounds will be turned down a bit more than usual and the children will be able to roam the studio class and create (or not) their next masterpiece.

SPD Symptoms Checklist

Many of the symptoms listed in the following categories are common to that particular age group. Where more than a few symptoms are found in a child, we recommend you talk to your doctor or check for a professional in your area experienced with treating Sensory Processing Disorder.*

What is Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)?

Sensory Processing Disorder or SPD (originally called Sensory Integration Dysfunction) is a neurological disorder in which the sensory information that the individual perceives results in abnormal responses.

Sensory processing refers to the way the nervous system receives messages from the senses and turns them into responses. For those with Sensory Processing Disorder, sensory information goes into the brain but does not get organized into appropriate responses.
